La laine, une fibre polyvalente aux multiples pouvoirs

A winter essential, wool is the ultimate fiber to stay warm. A noble material rich in history, at STORIATIPIC we offer you new scarves made of 100% high quality wool every year to dress you. In our latest articles "What is hidden under the manufacture of a scarf?" and "Special report: Trip to India with STORIATIPIC" we gave you our manufacturing secrets. Today, the panda team introduces you to the materials of wool, a material with many properties and special powers.

What is wool?

Wool is a natural animal material that comes from the hair of certain animals. It is woven to make textiles. Wool fiber comes from various mammals, most often sheep, but can also be made of rabbit, alpaca or goat hair. The properties of products made from this fiber differ depending on where the hair comes from, how long or soft it is. When the wool does not come from sheep, its name changes. For example, it can be called cashmere when the fiber is taken from a cashmere goat.

Wool is used in a variety of ways, mainly for clothing such as scarves, ready-to-wear, sweaters, but also for blankets, furniture, rugs, cushions, jewelry and other accessories. It's a versatile material that adapts to all kinds of creative projects.

Wool is an ancestral material that has developed a lot in the past. Its birth dates back to about 1500 years with J.-C. and was originally used in the countries of Northern Europe. The practice of shearing originated in this geographical area because of its climate but spread everywhere around the Mediterranean afterwards. It became one of the main textile activities in Europe until the eighteenth century. Today, polyester and acrylic are increasingly replacing wool because they are less expensive materials for manufacturers. Currently, wool production accounts for less than 2% of global textile production. This natural fiber is, in fact, used for medium and high-end clothing.

Its manufacture and properties

Wool is a material harvested through the shearing stage. Carried out manually, it consists of removing the fleece from the animal to recover it. The wool is then thoroughly washed, rinsed and dried to remove impurities from the animal's coat. To obtain a high-quality and smooth fiber, the fiber must be carded, i.e. combed, thanks to precise know-how. After this crucial step, the wool is spun to be put into balls. This is the last phase to make wool products. There are different kinds of colours for this fibre. They are obtained by dyeing at any stage of the manufacturing process.

Wool is an elegant fiber and sought after for its appearance and its many qualities. In addition to its softness and warmth, it is a useful textile all year round, light and thermo-regulating. Composed of 70% air thanks to its hollow structure (unlike artificial fibers), it creates an insulating layer of air between the body and the wool garment. The material retains heat while allowing air to circulate. This avoids perspiration odors but also from having positive or negative temperature excesses. And yes, wool is a material that can be worn at -20°C as well as at +20°C! People who live in the desert wear woollen clothing throughout the day despite the large temperature differences. It insulates in both directions and keeps you cool. Wool only when it's cold is a common misconception, it is also suitable for early and late summer! It is therefore a very versatile material that is soft, warm, anti-odor because it neutralizes bacteria, useful throughout the year and breathable.

Wools and down (cashmere) are the result of a complex and natural millennial evolution that make them ideal materials for protecting against outside temperatures. With all their advantages, it's time to opt for these exceptional fibers!

STORIATIPIC wools

At STORIATIPIC, we make it a point of honour to select our materials. That's why we offer several types of yarn to meet your needs and give a touch of style to your wardrobe. Our wool fibers are selected for their fineness and suppleness and do not cause itching skin reactions when worn.

For winter, what could be better than a soft and cocooning thick wool scarf to spend your days warm? As mentioned earlier, wool is a material that consists of 70% air, which makes it a lightweight textile. Thick wool owes its name to its special weave which gives it even more volume and gives it a vaporous appearance. This weaving technique uses a grouping of threads on each side of the weft and warp, unlike common weaving which uses only one. Our thick yarns are also made of silk which gives them an incomparable softness and feel.

We also make boiled wool scarves , which are very different visually and have a rougher feel. Boiled wool scarves are washed at very high temperatures to give a thicker effect to the textile. The weave tightens and gives an original felted look.
